First attempt to sketch Hortence, at the home of elders
From this lady, I made two water color sketches. As you see, the first time
she was looking so seriously at me that it confused her when she saw the draft.
But as Misses Hortence preferred a smiling portrait, I promised her a second attempt if she promised to smile while posing. So she did.

Van deze dame maakte ik twee waterverfschetsen.
Zoals je kan zien bij deze eerste, keek ze voortdurend zó ernstig, dat ze schrok toen ik haar het voorlopige resultaat toonde.
Maar mevrouw Hortence verkoos een lachend portret. Dus beloofde ik haar een tweede poging te ondernemen als zij me beloofde te zullen lachen tijdens het poseren. Dat deed ze ook.
