"DE TON" BIJ DE WATERMOLEN

 

OP EEN ZONOVERGOTEN LENTEDAG IN VIRTON

Virton wordt beschouwd als de hoofdplaats van de Gaume en heeft zijn naam te danken, aan de samenvloeiing van twee riviertjes op zijn grondgebied : De Vire en De Ton, aan wiens oever ik na een fikse stadswandeling prettig verpoosde en dit aquarelletje schilderde. 's Avonds vernam ik wat een geluksvogel ik wel was geweest, toen bleek dat 10 km verderop, het de hele dag geregend en geonweerd had, terwijl vanaf de vroege dageraad een stralend zonnetje, aan een wolkeloze hemel,  geen seconde van mijn zijde was geweken. Zoiets stemt een mens dankbaar, en ik zag meteen ook het bestaan van dat microklimaat in de Gaume bevestigd. De oogst die dag, bedroeg drie schetsen, die er anders vast niet zouden geweest zijn ...

DOBBEREND OP DE TON VAN CHANTILLON NAAR VIRTON

 

VIEW ON THE RIVER TON FROM THE GARDEN OF OUR GÎTE

In april we had a short stay in the Gaume (a region in the extreme southeast of Belgium. At a lower altitude than the Ardennes, it borders the French region of Lorraine to the south, the Land of Arlon to the east, and the Belgian part of the Ardennes to the north)  It has a micro climate, with warmer temperatures than the rest of the area and is a great place for long walks.

Near our gîte in Chantillon, was the source of the tiny river Ton that joins the Chiers to float later on into the river Meuse in France. I followed this watercourse towards Virton and made a small series of drawings on the go. This one's the first, drawn in the garden of our gîte where a beautiful magnolia was blooming that time.
