The mighty oak tree behind this church, who's leaves you see at my sketch, was 1200! years old and sooo beautifull! But alas too big to draw. He kept a chapel at his groundfloor and a hermit's room at the top of his hollow trunk.

Surely he must be one of the "Ents" from Tolkien's Lord of the Rings.  Imagine what stories this impressive tree could tell ...

Toen Nel, de poes (die mij dagelijks een bezoekje bracht en van wie je het verhaal hier kan lezen) in de zomer van het Coronajaar 2020 de genadespuit van haar baasje kreeg, was er plots een leegte in huis. Ach, wat miste ik dat lieve dier ...  Ze bracht gezelligheid op koude dagen en was

altijd bereid om voor mij te poseren, zoals deze reeks tekeningen laat zien. 

Maar wie schetst mijn verbazing toen nog geen jaar later een nieuw gezin in de wijk kwam wonen met drie katten waaronder eentje, voor wie zowat hetzelfde levensverhaal zich begon af te tekenen.

Mawie, een Britse korthaar, is een  witte kater met een stamboom, die het duidelijk niet kan vinden met zijn overige twee rasgenoten. Hij nadert enkel nog tot de voordeur waar zijn brokjes buiten staan, want binnen wil hij niet meer komen (of wie weet, wordt hij er soms door de andere katten verjaagd?) 

Iedere dag loopt hij verscheidene keren m'n deur langs voor een stukje kip, een aaitje wat aandacht. En wanneer het regenachtig of koud weer is, ligt ie voor de rest van de ochtend in de rieten zetel in mijn wasplaats te soezen.

Op de zonnige dagen slaapt hij liever in de tuin, bij voorkeur onder struiken of op de composthoop of gaat voor het keukenraam buiten in de zon zitten om naar binnen te staren, alsof hij een t.v.-serie bekijkt. Al is het een heuse raskat, hij gedraagt zich toch veeleer als een straatkat en ook hij is ondertussen gekend door de hele buurt, want Mawie is dan misschien niet erg "huiselijk" maar sociaal en aaibaar is hij wel. 

Hij zou best de reïncarnatie van Nell kunnen zijn mocht die optie bestaan.

Ook Mawie leerde al gauw hoe hij de hordeur kon openen die hem de toegang tot de wasplaats verspert. Toch zijn er kleine verschillen. 

Nel zat er niet mee om minutenlang voor me te poseren, maar om Mawie te tekenen moet ik echt momenten stelen waarop hij slaapt. Zodra hij merkt dat ik kom aanzetten met een schetsboek en potlood en 'm iets te doordringend aankijk, bolt hij het weer af.

Ook wat eten betreft, houdt hij er zijn eigen gewoonten op na.

Nel was niet kieskeurig en ging het op andere plaatsen soms werkelijk uit de pan jatten, om het vervolgens bij mij te brengen zodat ik het in stukjes zou snijden, maar daartoe verlaagt de adellijke Mawie zich natúúúúrlijk niet. 

Wèl leerde mijn zoon hem rondjes draaien om zijn kostje te "verdienen". Hij is namelijk verzot op kippenwit en lust enkel de fijnste stukjes vlees, en daar wil hij zeer bereidwillig wèl de gekste kunstjes voor aanleren... 

Misschien kan ik 'm met tijd en kip, ook leren poseren...?

Mja, katten ...

Side Note :

We arrived with snow on the 14th of February, yet we saw the Storks and the cranes return from the South that weekend and on the 17th ; the last day of our stay, spring arrived together with a flock of little birds which I guess were swallows, but I'm not sure about that, as they were in a very large group flying above the trees in the wood where we were walking, which made it hard to observe them because of the branches... and a summery warm spring sun blinding us.

It was a lovely experience though, I will not easy forget... And the most beautiful Valentine ever, organised by Mother Nature.

Side Note :

I never saw such a beautiful location as home for elderly people. I'm not a fan of homes for elders, but if I could choose, I wouldn't mind to spend the last years of my life in such a lovely surounding, at least if the service is in style as well ;-)

Next time I'll post a couple of drawings from my Valentine trip to bad Rehburg (Niedersachsen - Germany) last february.
